PawA Snuggling Sheltie Named Mr. Parker Draws People Out

Sometimes I forget how much I love serving people who have mental illness. Tonight Mr. Parker and I got to start volunteering in a new psychiatric facility. The therapist could hardly stop talking to me afterwards about the response of the patients – one who talked easily and lucidly for almost 45 minutes about the animals in his life, and another who responded with words and actions after weeks of being essentially unresponsive.

All it took was a furry Sheltie who was all about snuggling and playing the shell game with Cheerios! I love AAT (animal-assisted therapy)! – Debbie
